Organizational culture is a key issue for business development and business success. At the same time organizational culture is recognized as a main health influencing social environmental factor. Therefore developing a healthy organizational culture provides the opportunity to serve business ambitions and health promotion ambitions as well.
However knowledge on how this social work environment should be developed and the effectiveness of interventions on organizational culture is lacking. In this study an intervention on organizational culture will be developed and evaluated, aiming at developing a social work environment in which self-regulation with respect to health and vitality among workers will be improved. This study therefore aims at serving both (business and health) interests.

OBJECTIVE
The development and evaluation of a culture intervention aimed at developing a social work environment in which self-regulation with respect to health and vitality among office workers will be improved.
BACKGROUND
Health promotion within the work setting is relevant, both from public health and from business perspective. The mutual interaction between work and health provides the opportunity to serve both business and health aims (parallel interests).
With respect to business development and business success organizational culture in increasingly viewed as essential. At the same time organizational culture is recognized as a health influencing social environmental factor. Therefore developing a healthy organizational culture is serving the business ambitions and health promotion as well.
However knowledge on how this social work environment should be developed and the effectiveness of interventions on organizational culture is lacking. The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate an intervention on organizational culture aimed at developing a social work environment in which self-regulation with respect to health and vitality among workers will be improved.
METHOD
The Intervention Mapping protocol will be used to develop the intervention concerned. In this study the IM protocol will be used from business perspective. The (business and health) needs, belonging methods and strategies will be developed jointly with the involving companies. Improving social dialogue and facilitating collective learning processes will be part of this intervention.
Evaluation will be taken place by means of a controlled trial. Participants will be assigned in two different groups: 1) the intervention group and 2) the control group.
Measurements will take place preceding the intervention (T0), directly following the intervention (T1, after 6 months) and after 12 months (T2) to evaluate the long term effects. Primary outcome effects are social capital and self determination. Secundary outcomes are vitality, mental health and individual and organizational functioning. To evaluate both the developments in the social context and the process of implementation, a process evaluation will be performed.
RESULTS
The intervention will be developed in 2008/2009. The controlled trial will be in 2010. The first results can be expected in 2011.
